Green Day, U2 To Reopen Superdome

Irish rockers U2 and California punk-popsters Green Day will team up September 26 to help launch the reopening of the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans before a live television audience, according to liveDaily.com report.

The pairing, part of the Music Rising campaign which seeks to bring music back to the hurricane - and flood-ravaged Gulf Coast, will take place before ESPN's Monday Night Football game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints.

The Superdome became a symbol of Hurricane Katrina in the early days following the natural disaster, when chaotic scenes from the ruined stadium -- used controversially as an overcrowded relief shelter -- were broadcast around the world. The NFL game will be the first official event held in the stadium since the facility's extensive renovation over the last year.

ESPN will air the U2 and Green Day live performances in their entirety during the cable network's Monday Night Football pre-game show.

"My visits to New Orleans gave me a firsthand look at the devastation which tragically destroyed the lives of thousands. The area's rich and spirited culture must continue to be restored," U2 guitarist The Edge said in a press release.

"Providing musical instruments through Music Rising will not only help the professional musicians but all the churches and schools in need through phase two of the program. Music Rising is dedicated to helping regain a foothold on their future but will also ensure that one of the Gulf Coast's greatest assets, its music, will rise again."

The performance will inaugurate Music Rising Phase II, in which the relief organization plans to provide musical instruments to churches and schools in the region. The main thrust of the campaign so far has been in providing assistance to thousands of musicians in the region whose livelihood was threatened by the disaster and its effect on the local music industry.

"One year later, people continue to be devastated by Katrina's effects," Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in the press release. "We hope that by collaborating with U2, we'll remind the public that people of the Gulf Coast are still suffering and still need help to rebuild their lives. The Edge and Music Rising are providing support to schools, churches and musicians who lost everything in the storm, including their ability to make a living. We are honored to be asked and proud to be part of that."[addsig]

I live 150km from Houston, I never saw this and there is way too much for me to read in German, because my german is ok, but that is far too complicated.

Anyhow, New Orleans is a pit of a town and its really too bad that it wasnt totally destroyed. It is a very poor town and the hurricane showed just how many crappy people live there. Its unfortunate that they are poor and that they are uneducated, but they also see the government as some sort of provider, which in the US it is not, unlike Germany.

People in the US do not wish to pay taxes like they do in Germany or even Canada, however when something bad happens, they want the government to fix it. It is a really stupid system because people want everything but wish to pay nothing, particularly the poor and uneducated (again, who are the primary residents of New Orleans).

So then what happens when the government actually helps them? Yep, porn, guns, prostitutes, etc etc, the typical vices of the poor and uneducated, rather than doing something for themselves with the money, they "blew it" and then complain that the government did not help them, or did too little to protect them.

Had they been intelligent in the first place, the city and state would have protected themselves. However as you Germans have said many times, the US is backwards with its laws and thinking and Louisiana is one of the worst places, if I was a German tourist I would not feel safe there.

So .. do not have pity for the idiots of Louisiana .. they choose to live in a city where boats float higher than their homes, but that is so awful and dirty that you know every time it rains that it might plug the flood system.

____

Furthermore, Rita was overblown, most of the trouble from that one was caused by people panicing. My German girlfriend was here last year and she was scared too, because there are no hurricanes in Germany, but I wasnt .. and I live in a river valley.

The fact was, at 150km inland no one was going to get hurt .. the most trouble was caused by people trying to leave Houston (on the gulf) and getting stuck without gas or getting stuck in traffic. Of course those are the same stupid people who try to take main roads when there is an evacuation, there were plenty of back roads to take and they would have made it far enough inland to be safe.

Regardless, the Thursday before the hurricane my Uni had a football game, it was on TV and everything was fun. No one here was worried.

The media and black people in the US have way overblown this, mostly because the poor blacks of New Orleans think that the government owes them something, when they pay no taxes to be owed anything from.

New Orleans wird wieder geräumt. Echt krass.
